Social Media Club

IMG_0721The premise for “The Student Social Media Club” originated from conversations with school principals, and vice and assistant principals inspired by the Student Restorative Learning series.

A proactive series of student workshops, The Student Social Media Club guides and inspires students to think differently about the power of their device and the quality of time they spend online.

THE STUDENT SOCIAL MEDIA CLUB . . .

  • WHO IT’S FOR: Students that want to elevate their awareness and intentionality with their device, screen-time and sense of well-being and confidence online.

Students with goals that extend beyond their current school; athletes, academics, the arts, science and technology, trades, internships and apprenticeships – and other interests.

  • HOW IT WORKS (1): Delivered remotely via Zoom, Meet or MS Teams, and during school hours, students write one response to four questions: What brings them joy? What are they good at? What are they most proud of? What do they want to be known for?

Students wishing to increase the impact of their connections relevant to their aspirations will also identify leaders and decision-makers within that discipline. For athletes that could mean AD’s, coaches, managers, programs, schools, recruiters and others.

  • HOW IT WORKS (2): Students identify five social media accounts from each of the above four questions (or their future aspirations) – and do three things; (1) Follow those accounts; (2) Read through the account’s content and links on the profiles to learn what is important to that user; (3) How they – the student – can contribute to the user. This is now their primary activity, online.
  • ACCOUNTABILITY: Two weeks following the initial session is a follow-up to gauge student progress, offer additional support and answer questions. Further follow-ups may be requested.
  • AWARENESS: Students become comfortable with their new perspective on how they spend their time online, the accounts they follow, and WHY.

Students begin gathering information that benefits their future – and they contribute altruistically to leaders in a way that doesn’t require the expectation of a return. If an acknowledgement from a leader does happen it is because of the students’ authentic engagement.

  • SUMMARY: As students acclimate to a renewed sense of what is important to them and how they spend their time online, their skills, self-awareness and confidence increase with screen-time becoming focused and meaningful.
